I saw some guys a few years ago building a Caterham and said they were putting an SR20 in it. What would you put up in front? Personally, either a 2.3 EcoBoost from a Mustang/FoRS, or the inline-5 from the new RS3/TT RS.

FD rotary, mild build, swap the twin turbos for a Borg-warner 6758. Shoot for 250-300hp with an insanely fast spool, and 10k rev limit. Banshee wail all but gaurenteed. Done
I like the inline-5 idea as well.

1st gen 1uz-fe, or in extra extra dreamland a 1gz-fe. Both backed by a 350z 6 speed (because im biased, also the uz may have the same transmission bolt points as a gz)

The Audi 5 cylinder has been done and is amazing:
(well, it’s been sort of done, as Donkervoort started out building Caterham replica’s and evolved them into this)
Personally, I would go for a naturally aspirated 13b or 20b, as they are light, and give a low centre of gravity.

The only logical answer. 4G63, specifically 6 bolt. Rock solid reliability, unlimited power potential, massively good sound, painfully simple. This is a no brainer.

Honda L15B7 from the Civic SI. Anything mor powerful in one of those things and I’d scare myself. But can you even put an engine designed for transverse applications in a Caterham 7? You would need a bunch of custom machining to mate engine and transmission, right?

One of the high performance Atlas engines (as originally intended for either the TrailBlazer SS or a planned Colorado SS), either a turbo 4.2I6 or turbo 3.5I5.

Just suggested a relative of this. The engines they FIRST were going to use for the TBSS and Colorado SS—or whatever it was going to be called—the turbo versions of the 4.2I6 and 3.5I5.

GM 3800 from a 4th gen F body.
Decent torque, plenty of rev range, stout as all hell. Plus it can be supercharged if I get tired of the stock 200hp.

I plan to use an NA 3.7 with some headers and head work, I don’t see why 300hp is out of reach.

300 should be doable. Between headers and some tuning I know they can hit ~285ish.

Under 400 pounds... I wouldn’t want to yank that out of the water without a winch. It’s not all that much heavier than a SVO turbo 2.3L Ford, and it makes about the same power without any boost lag.
I know it’s not the best power to weight you can find, but I like displacement over boost.

Yeah from the research I’ve done the exhaust ports are pretty restrictive and the stock exhaust manifold is terrible. The forums seem to be gaining 30-45hp pretty easily with some porting and long tubes. I also plan on designing an ITB setup which should help as well. A good set of cams would help, but they’d have to be a complete custom blank and grind.
